Kate is the founder and driving force behind Sound Roots. She has worked as a professional musician and instrumental tutor since 2006 and is passionate about making high-quality music education accessible, engaging and inspiring for children of all ages.
Kate studied trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music, where she completed a Postgraduate Performance Diploma and was awarded the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) Teaching Diploma with Distinction. Prior to this, she studied Business & Management at Exeter University whilst continuing to perform extensively as both a classical and jazz musician.
Music has been a huge part of Kate’s life from an early age. She began learning trumpet at the age of nine and went on to study at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama and perform with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. As a teenager she performed with the Championship Section Aveley & Newham Brass Band, taking part in competitions, recordings and theatre performances including the London production of Brassed Off at the National Theatre.
Alongside teaching, Kate continues to work professionally as a freelance musician in the UK and abroad. Her performing career has included orchestral, theatre, commercial and function work, with appearances at venues including the Barbican, Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall, as well as performances at festivals and events across the UK and internationally. Career highlights have included working with the Orchestra of English National Ballet, performing at the Hua Hin Jazz Festival in Thailand, recording alongside members of the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé orchestras, and writing and recording with legendary Cream lyricist Pete Brown.
Kate teaches trumpet as her principal instrument, but also has extensive experience teaching all brass instruments, piano, recorder and music theory. She believes strongly that music should be enjoyable, confidence-building and tailored to the individual child, whether they are learning purely for fun or working towards performances and exams.
As a busy mum of three musical children herself, Kate understands the importance of creating lessons which are supportive, encouraging and realistic for modern family life.
Kate looks forward to supporting your child on their musical journey and would be very happy to answer any questions you may have.
