Applications are open to all Rochester Riverside pupils.

School Address:

Gas House Road, Rochester, Kent, ME1 1US

If you would like to apply for instrumental lessons for your child please complete the following application form. Places are given on a ‘first come, first served’ basis depending upon availability. If there are no spaces currently available your child will be placed on the waiting list and you will be notified of this. Once you have accepted a place for lessons it is your responsibility to ensure your child has their instrument, book and any other materials for each lesson – there are no spare instruments available at school if your child forgets to bring their own (but they are still welcome to attend). Lessons are payable in advance upon receipt of an invoice by Sound Roots, and registration is ongoing. There is a 6 lesson notice period to discontinue lessons.

Please see our fee page for more information.

Your child may apply to learn more than one instrument. However, priority will be given to pupils applying for their first instrument, particularly where places are limited. Please remember that regular attendance and consistent practice are essential to making good progress on every instrument studied.

If you have submitted an application form but not received a follow-up email from us please do send us an email so that we can check on the status of your application.

Since Sound Roots is an external supplier of services to your child's school, we need to ensure GDPR protocols are met. As such, Sound Roots needs to share some basic data (pupils' names and classes) with your child's school in order to facilitate timetabling lessons etc. This information is never made public, it is only known to Sound Roots, the school administrative staff and yourself. We may also include your child's name in a printed / online format (e.g. in a Concert Programme). Sound Roots will only include your child's first name on public materials in order to comply with GDPR protocols. Your personal data will never be shared with any other party. You may contact us at any time to ask what data we are keeping and how it is being used.
Sound Roots use WhatsApp group chats alongside emails to update parents on new timetables, timetable changes, extenuating circumstances and reminders. By clicking 'Opt-in' you give permission for us to add your emergency contact number to the relevant group chat.

Individual lessons may be cancelled with at least 24 hours' notice. Lessons cancelled with more than 24 hours' notice will not be charged. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged in full and will not normally be rearranged. If a tutor is unable to attend a lesson, we will arrange a suitable alternative lesson or credit the missed lesson fee. Tuition is provided on an ongoing basis. Should you wish to cancel or pause your child's lessons, six lessons' written notice must be given by email. The six-lesson notice period applies regardless of attendance, and lessons within the notice period remain payable whether attended or not. The same six-lesson notice period applies to tutors, ensuring continuity and stability for pupils and families. The six-lesson notice period comes into effect when you accept a lesson place, as teaching time is reserved and tutors are committed from that point onwards. Fees are payable in advance upon receipt of an invoice from Sound Roots. Lesson fees are calculated on a pro-rata basis according to the lesson length agreed with your tutor. Fees are reviewed annually and are generally aligned with the Musicians' Union's recommended teaching rates. Any fee changes will be communicated in advance. We will always do our best to accommodate requests to change lesson times where possible. If you become aware of a timetabling issue, please let us know as soon as possible. Lesson places are subject to tutor availability and are not guaranteed upon submission of an application form. We will contact you to confirm whether a place is available or whether your child has been added to a waiting list. Places are normally offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Where a place is offered and accepted, Sound Roots may decline to hold that place indefinitely if lessons are repeatedly postponed before tuition has commenced.
